Roberto Akira Sugai is my name. I live in Brazil, I’m 70 years old, now on 2021, chemist from Unicamp, class of 1977. I worked 35 years in the chemical industry sector in OEM automotive coatings in areas of product development, quality system and marketing. I am retired since 2009 and in recent times, I have worked providing consulting in areas of paint technology, business and quality, with emphasis on the 6 Sigma methodology.
The purpose of this site is to share the knowledge I have acquired over time. I do this so frank and sincere, devoid of any intention other than the sharing of knowledge. Accumulated knowledge and not shared, serves no purpose, is a waste.
I wanted to be happy and learn doing it.

See the Beth Bacchini site: http://www.santosabao.com.br/home.htm, sorry, only in portuguese
Your site is awesome! Thank you for sharing your precious knowledge with us, I’ll learn from you and hopefully pass it on to others! I’m about to follow your grid soap tutorial, I’ll let you know how it comes out 🙂
Roberto – I enjoyed your website. Like you I am a retired chemist who enjoys soapmaking. Do you know of a method for determining the alkalinity in finished soap? I have tried Kevin Dunn’s method (dissolve in EtOH & titrate with acid) but have had limited success due to poor solubility of the soap. The AOCS method uses a reflux which I am not set up for. I’ve also just tried salting out the soap with NaCl but the short chain soap molecules are still slightly soluble. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Jerry
Sorry, I’ve been traveling for 45 days and just now saw your comments.I do not know of a method to determine the alkalinity of soap. Only I measure the pH of the soap with a pH meter.
Thank you for all that you have shared. I will return again and again to learn more
I have wanted to make beldi soap for the past year but don’t know what to ask for when shopping for the Black Olive Paste. If I search online I find food recipes. I am in Canada ( USA) markets open to me
Curious also about the aluminum blocks you use to make moulds. You are so ingenious!
I didn’t know that there are olive seeds in the beldi soap. I don’t feel it in the sample jar I was given. Love the scent!!
Again, thank you for sharing

Colleen,
As a fellow Canadian .. you can just buy canned black olives, already pitted and turn them into mash using a food processor or blender.
great website and very informative.
I am particularly interested in effectiveness of essential oil in the soap. i have done only melt /pour and cold process soaps. i am trying to get the most out of essential oils. do you think essential oil benefits outcome is better in melt and pour process ?
Christina,
Thank you!
Yes, certainly the essential oils will be very benefical in melt & pour soap because the EO will be not submitted to stress of chemical reaction – saponification.
I have the highest repect for you. I am a retired professor and I relate to your feeling good about sharing your knowlege. Nature and Life are wonderful, we should resist evil temptations. Mac
